Shocking Footage Shows Moment Police Suffer Blade Attacks in Ambush
A senior officer who jumped to the help of a partner that got attacked by a blade-wielder received the Royal Recognition for Valor.
Sgt Tim Ansell grappled with twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Brown after he pressed a knife to the throat of his colleague Sergeant Marc Foster.
Brown launched his attack as the officers and their colleague, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were conversing to a driver following a traffic accident in that location in July 2023.
Brown stabbed and slashed both Sergeant Ansell and Sergeant Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a stun gun.
"Policeman knifed," PC Wolstencroft could be heard saying over his communication device.
Officer-mounted and dashcam footage made public by the force depicted Brown, who was dressed in dark clothing with a head covered, approach to Sgt Foster from the rear with a blade pointed forward.
He ran into the policeman who stumbled and dropped to the street, after which Sgt Ansell intervened and struggled to restrain him to the ground despite being continually attacked with the weapon.
PC Wolstencroft deployed his electric weapon and sought a clear shot, concluding the confrontation to an end.
Sergeant Ansell was heard stating: "I need assistance on my neck here, I got knifed in the neck."
Sgt Ansell suffered two lacerations to his neck and further cuts to his limbs and body, whereas Sgt Foster received slash wounds.
The department said Sergeant Foster used his bare hands to stop his colleague's hemorrhaging before emergency responders arrived.
The latest honor comes after the three officers won internal Bravery Awards in October 2023 and the John Egerton Bravery Award from the local officer association in April 2024.
They further earned a Regional Courage Honor in summer 2024.
"The actions of each policeman in the end saved themselves and ensured no members of the public endured any injuries."
Brown was given to an indefinite hospital order in April 2024, per authorities.
