Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Lineup Versus India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from the three-game ODI series against India, as in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected selection.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI team following scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI innings.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
Recent performances suggest of a return to form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia search for a solution to their opening batting issues.
Bowling Returns and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to secure a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from October 29.
